“I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” - Jacob (Genesis 32:30)

In the book of Genesis, we read about the story of Jacob, one of the great patriarchs of the Israelites. Jacob was a man who faced many challenges and struggles throughout his life. He was born as the younger twin brother of Esau, and he tricked his brother into giving him his birthright and blessing. This led to a bitter rivalry between the two brothers, and Jacob was forced to flee from his home to escape Esau’s wrath.

After many years of wandering, Jacob found himself on the banks of the Jabbok River, where he had a life-changing encounter with God. This encounter is described in Genesis 32:24-30, where we read that Jacob wrestled with a man until daybreak. The man turned out to be an angel of God, and Jacob refused to let go until the angel blessed him.

During the struggle, the angel touched Jacob’s hip, causing it to be dislocated. Despite the pain, Jacob continued to hold on until the angel blessed him. The angel then changed Jacob’s name to Israel, which means “one who struggles with God.” After the encounter, Jacob declared, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

This moment is significant in many ways. First, it marks a turning point in Jacob’s life. Before the encounter, Jacob was a man who relied on his own cunning and trickery to get what he wanted. But after wrestling with God, Jacob realized he could not succeed alone. He needed God’s blessing and guidance to live a meaningful life.

Second, the encounter with God at Peniel teaches us that we can have a personal relationship with God. Jacob did not see God in a vision or a dream; he saw God face to face. It means that we, too, can personally encounter God. We can experience God’s presence and hear His voice speaking to us, guiding us, and blessing us.

Third, the encounter at Peniel teaches us that we must be persistent in our pursuit of God. Jacob refused to let go until the angel blessed him, even though it caused him physical pain. We, too, must be persistent in our pursuit of God. We must be willing to endure hardships and setbacks as we seek to know Him more deeply.

Fourth, the encounter at Peniel teaches us that God’s blessings often come through struggles and hardships. Jacob’s encounter with God was not easy. He had to wrestle with an angel all night, and his hip was dislocated in the process. But through the struggle, Jacob received God’s blessing and was transformed.

Finally, the name Peniel itself has significance. It means “face of God,” a reminder that God is always with us. No matter where we go or what we face, God is there, watching over us and guiding us. As we journey through life, may we, too, have a personal encounter with God at our own Peniel, and may we be transformed by His presence and blessing.
